On 14th August 15 members of the Westbury Walkers club, led by David Barker, set off from Salisbury Street car park in Mere on what turned out to be a very warm glorious sunny, summer Sunday.
Leaving the car park by the steps at the rear and turning left into Dark Lane, they followed the Monarch Way out of Mere and across a series of fields and tracks to West Knowle and Manor Farm, before bearing right to walk to Upton, turning right into the road and following it into Martha’s Lane.
Passing across the bottom of Hang Wood they made their way through the Woodland Trust area to a field on the far side with a high point of 152m and 360 degree views, where they stopped for lunch in the warm sunshine.
After lunch they made their way to the southerly tip of Common Wood and across Barrow Street Lane to Causeway Farm, turning right into the tarmac lane that leads down into Limpers Hill, before turning sharp left to follow Limpers Hill Road to its junction with Shaftesbury Road.
Following various public footpaths they made their way to Rook Street to cross a footbridge over the chalk stream to follow the narrow tarmac path across the fields back into Mere.
Before setting off home, the walkers were treated to a generous supply of plums from the fruit trees of member Rob Hearnden.
