A young member of the West Wiltshire Society of Model Engineers in Westbury has been recognised with a national award for his model building skills.
11-year-old Oliver Sausins impressed judges at the National Garden Railway Show in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, where he won the Class Winner Award in the Junior section for his model of ‘Britomart’, a Quarry class Hunslet locomotive.
“I was so happy,” said Oliver. “Winning was amazing. I spent a lot of time trying to make an engine that would get me 1st place at the junior cup at the 16mm train show – and I managed to win!”
Oliver, along with his dad and grandad, is an active member of the Westbury-based West Wiltshire Society of Model Engineers.
The Society’s director, Tony, said, “Oliver has been a member of the club for three years. Alongside several other junior members, he is helping to develop our garden railway at the club’s site at White Horse Country Park in Westbury.
“The group actively encourages younger members to discover the enjoyment of model engineering. You can often see junior modellers running their engines and even helping operate the larger miniature railway during the summer season.”
