WEST Wilts Youth Sailing Association, based at Westbury lake, recently introduced 29 new youngsters to the lake for a taster session, some in the morning and the rest in the afternoon.
The club reports, “At the start, they sat down in silence, but having been shown the way around a boat by Peter, they started to warm to each other and within an hour were all chatting away with their new-found friends. They learned how to complete a dry capsize following the instructions from Finn, James and Oli. They were then assigned boats and sailing buddies and off they went to control their craft, swapping roles as they gained confidence. To round things off, we played some games on the water, ensuring everyone was soaked!
“The morning session saw a few unplanned breaks as we were suffered heavy rainstorms, but the afternoon group enjoyed brilliant sunshine all afternoon. Whichever group the child was in, they all left with big smiles and having enjoyed their new experiences. Thank you to all our volunteers who help run this successful day.
“Our next opportunity is for the adult sailing course which starts on 28th September and runs for the four Saturdays (28/09, 05/10, 12/10 and 19/10). This course proves popular every year and we currently have just two spaces left, so if you are interested in gaining a new skill or revising one you already have please email secretary @wwysa.org.uk for more details.
