A young swimmer from Westbury has made waves at the Southwest Regional Championships by taking home a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke.
13-year-old Roan Watkin, from Westbury Amateur Swimming Club, dominated the event, held at the Hengrove Park Olympic-sized swimming pool in Bristol on Saturday 10th May.
Roan’s impressive performance has earned him a spot among the top 15 fastest swimmers in his age group nationwide.
“This achievement is a testament to his dedication and natural talent, which has been nurtured by Westbury ASC’s coaching team,” said a spokesperson for the club.

“What’s remarkable about Roan’s success is that he trains in the town’s Victorian pool, which measures 22 1/2 yards, amidst limited resources. Despite competing against swimmers from more prominent clubs with state-of-the-art facilities and substantial funding, Roan has proven that talent and determination can triumph over adversity.
“Westbury ASC takes pride in its history of producing regional champions, with Roan following in the footsteps of previous winners. The club believes that with the right support and opportunities, its swimmers can excel at the highest levels, up to university swimming.”
Stephen Pyne, coach at Westbury ASC, said, “We’re incredibly proud of Roan’s achievement. This is a shining example of what can be accomplished with hard work, talent, and the right guidance.”
