AS the Poppy Appeal launches this weekend, the Royal British Legion hope the support of local people will be as generous as ever and match, or even better, the £7,000 that was raised in Westbury last year.
Eddie Bridges, president of the Westbury branch of the Royal British Legion said, “There will be collecting boxes in all the usual shops, and we will have people collecting in the Co-op and Morrisons, and on Saturday 10th November in the High Street.
“Just over £7,000 was raised in last year’s appeal, and we’re just hoping the people of Westbury are as generous again this year. I know finances are tight. The money from the Poppy Appeal goes to help ex-servicemen and servicemen who require help financially, or need goods bought for them. We’ve also got respite homes, and put money into places Help for Heroes have got as well.”
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign, and in 2011 raised a record-breaking £40million nationally.
The annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service will be held in Westbury on Sunday 11th November. This year, the format of the morning is changing with the parade mustering in the Market Place instead of Warminster Road car park. They will then march along West End to the service, which will start at the war memorial at around 10.40am as usual.
