An important home game for Westbury vs Swindon 2nds, who lie just below Westbury in the league, but the home side found victory with thanks to great defence, speedy breakthroughs and the impeccable boot of captain, Aaron Vaughan.

Westbury started tense, giving away multiple penalties in the first stages with breakdowns an issue. The first score for Swindon came from a Westbury mistake from the line-out, leading to a kick and chase for a try under the post with conversion. 0-7.

The play started again quick with Westbury finding their game heads, making decent ground and driving phases, leading to a maul. Play then breaks across field to Bill (Matt Inseal) who goes through to score Westbury’s first try. Captain Aaron Vaughan kicks conversion 7-7.

The opening stages show it was going to be an end-to-end game, with both teams making use of the others’ mistakes. But Westbury show their skill with forwards crashing through the defence line, leading to wing-to-wing play making valuable ground.

However, Swindon’s wing breaks through the Westbury defence putting pressure on the home team but Westbury wing Stee Koro kicks to safety. Swindon’s line out sees Pete Cryer within fingertips of a steal but quick hands from the Swindon backs see them over the line once again and over the posts. 7-14.

After a successful line out from hooker, Jack Bates, a driving maul ends just shy of the try line, Westbury get a penalty for Swindon’s back chat, with the lads wanting to punish them. Logan Smith then crashes over the line, with captain Aaron Vaughan converting yet again to do just that. 14-14.

The second half was all Westbury with accurate wing-to-wing action making valuable ground and some excellent defence work. Swindon, victims of multiple handling mistakes, showing that the pressure was getting to them.

Full back, Ash Hart came into play after picking up a lost ball out on the wing driving it forward, popping it to Sam Mcqueen who then used his impressive speed down the line to score, bringing the score to 22-14, 24-14 after Vaughan conversion.

Westbury fully in the swing of things, putting in some great plays with Swindon not able to contest, Ash Hart runs on to the ball, speeding through the defence to score right under the posts, making it easy for Vaughan to convert ,making it four tries and a bonus point scored for the home team. 31-14.

Proving his accurate boot, Aaron Vaughan scores a penalty from a fair distance to make the score 34-14.

With the game looking solid for Westbury, the points didn’t stop there as a defence steal and turnover ball sees Logan Smith once again breaking through and scoring under the post with yet another conversion from the team captain. Final score 41-14 to Westbury.
