MATRAVERS School hit all the right notes and rocked the audience during their rendition of ‘We Will Rock You’ last week, performing four nights at the Matravers theatre.
Opening night on Tuesday 4th December saw lazer beams, red high-heeled PVC boots, tasteful innuendos and a whole lot of rocking. The cast showed off their talents, proving the arts programme in schools is well and truly alive and well.
The show, set 300 years in the future, saw Galileo Figaro (played by Daniel Jones) and his ‘chick’ Scaramouche (played by Maisie Long) find hidden rock, forbidden by the ruling Globalsoft Corporation on Planet Mall.
Killer Queen, ruler of the corporation, (played by Tom Bond) alongside right hand man Khashoggi (played by Cameron Sinden) must try to stop them.
Galileo and Scaramouche are helped along the way by the Bohemians, a group of outcasts who too have tried, but failed, to find the lost instruments of rock. Bohemian duo of Britney Spears (played by Toby Robinson) and Meatloaf (played by Bryony Patton-Cuff) steer Galileo towards the light as well as Pop, (played by Meg Cox), Freddie (played by Sam Veall) and Teacher (played by Chloe Kinder).
The chorus created the GaGa girls, under the spell of the Globalsoft corporation and the pack of bohemians who have escaped to freedom.
With a live band, face melting the guitar solos and riffs of Queen, the students took legendary songs ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Somebody To Love’ and got the audience clapping along.
Phoenix Motorcycles in Trowbridge also lent the cast a motorbike to use as Galileo, Scaramouche and Pop rush ‘headlong’ towards finding the hidden instruments.
The show ran from Tuesday 4th to Friday 7th December. Overall, the show was full of drama, rock, roll and passion with all involved from backstage, tech, lighting, music, costumes and cast all putting in maximum effort.
Director of the show, Rebecca Walker said, “I am incredibly proud of our students for their commitment and passion towards this show. The standard of performance in ‘We Will Rock You’ was stunning; I have to remind myself that we are in our school theatre, as they conducted themselves with absolute professionalism.
“Somebody said whilst referring to the staging design, that we had gone for ‘go big, or go home’ and I think the same applies to the students! They have been outstanding. Each of them should be incredibly proud of themselves. I certainly am!”
