Westbury rider competes at Silverstone

Sean and Jay Able

YOUNG racer, Jay Able, was one of the youngest to compete at the iconic Silverstone  track over the Easter weekend, competing in the first round of British Superbikes Junior Supersport.

Jay from Westbury who is 13, competed at Silverstone  on his Yamaha YZF-R3l, averaging over 80mph. He raced against riders aged 13 – 22 years.

It was his first time riding at the main Silverstone circuit, and is on a less powerful bike than his competitors. Even so, starting 33rd out of 38 on the grid, he came in 28th and 24th in his two races, and 4th fastest Yamaha in both.

Highlights of British Superbikes were featured on Eurosport and ITV4. He will also be racing at Donington Park next on the weekend of the 24th May.

Jay said, “I found Silverstone fun, as the level of competition was much higher than at club racing. I also enjoyed the track as it has a variety of corners that were challenging to learn. But most of all, the battles in race two were amazing.

“I’m looking forward to Donington Park because I’m much more confident that I can compete against the other riders in the championship, and know the track already, being one of my favourites, with some fast, flowing corners.

Mark Able, Jay’s father said, “I’m very proud of Jay’s achievements, being his first year in British Superbikes and not knowing most the tracks.

“He’s one of the youngest, and has one of the least powerful bikes, and is still beating more experienced riders on more powerful machinery. Now he’s found his confidence, he’ll go from strength to strength, I’m sure.

“He’s always been the same in the Minibike series, finding his confidence, and then challenging for the podium. I look forward to seeing what he can do. We’re aiming to use 2019 as a learning year, and 2020 the year where he challenges for the podium. But who knows, it might start to happen sooner.

“We are seeking sponsorship to be able to improve the Yamaha, which can be viewed at Phoenix Motorcycles in Trowbridge. We would like to thank our current sponsors:-

Brendan Smith of RPM/Smith’s Budgens at Codford. Malcolm Barrington of Energy Management Ltd. Matthew Rowe of Hire Standards Ltd. Kev Spiech of Phoenix Motorcycles. Tony Deacon of T.Deacon Fencing Ltd. Shaun May of JJ Van Sales. Ben Bennyboy Smith of Smith’s Engine Services. Jaspal Kalsi of Jazz Tyres. Rock Oil Trowbridge. Rich Noakes of Trowbridge Towbar Services. SP Engineering. NG Road Racing. Jay Dexter of DRC Racewear. James Cox at Swindon Karting and Colin of Hairy Beast Pix.

“If you are interested in becoming a sponsor you can contact me on  07974 185861.”
