2020 is a celebratory year for Westbury United Football Club.
Currently playing in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division, the year marks a centenary for the club who were formed in 1920 when Westbury Old Comrades FC and Westbury Great Western Railway XI amalgamated, hence the club name Westbury United.
A number of events are being planned during the year. At the time of going to press the following events/matches will be taking place
1. Saturday 2nd May; Kayleigh’s Cancer Fundraiser Fun Day at Meadow Lane, organised by Hope For Tomorrow including a firewalk.
2. Westbury United Memorabilia Display at Westbury Heritage Centre from Monday 11th May.
3. Saturday 13th June; Westbury United Players’ Fun Day at Meadow Lane.
4. Sunday 28th June ; Classic Car Competition at Meadow Lane.
5. Saturday 18th July; 12 Hour Physical Challenge at Ironworx Gymnasium, Westbury.
6. Saturday 25th July; Quiz Night at Meadow Lane, 8pm.
There are matches in the pipeline versus Bristol City, Warminster Town First Team and Veterans, Bath City (the first opponents to play at Meadow Lane) and Swindon Town for which definite dates will be announced soon.
The club reports, “The First team are already marking the centenary celebrations by wearing a traditional green and white kit relevant to that which was first worn in 1920. The last few seasons have seen a big upturn in success for the club. In season 2017-2018 the First Team won the Western League Division One title, then in 2018-2019 the club achieved its equal highest ever league placing (5th in the Western Premier) with a record points tally, so the centenary year has come at a great time!
“Westbury United are famous for being the first club that John Atyeo played for. Atyeo went on to play professionally for Bristol City and represented England in 6 internationals, scoring 5 goals.
“What better way to celebrate the centenary than playing friendly matches versus clubs with such important roles in the first 100 years, as well as hosting various days that will appeal to people of all ages?
