PROJECT, ‘yarn bomb’ the war memorial in Westbury with handmade poppies is well under way, with over 400 poppies already donated.
Emma Symonds from EJ Crafts on Maristow Street came up with the idea to cover the war memorial in poppies for Remembrance Sunday after seeing something similar in Warminster.
Anyone can get involved – whether you sew, knit or crochet, the more poppies the better.
Emma said, “It’s going really well. Already I have over 400 poppies and businesses, groups and individuals have shown interest in getting involved. I know there’s a lot more that have been made as well, that are yet to be dropped off at the shop.”
Emma has patterns for knitting and crochet poppies in her shop and the cost is a donation to the Royal British Legion.
Emma holds a ‘Knit and Natter’ session every other Wednesday 6.00pm-7.30pm and every Saturday afternoon, and up until Remembrance Sunday, will be holding poppy knitting workshops where you can come and knit or crochet poppies and make new friends. The cost for both sessions is just a donation towards refreshments.
If you would like to join but you don’t know how to knit or crochet a poppy, Emma is giving lessons for £3.50 and will be donating £1 of this to the Royal British Legion. The lesson can be held on weekdays, evenings and weekends and can be one-to-one or in groups.
The poppies will be put on the railings around the rotunda, the railings on the war memorial and, weather permitting, spread them all over the garden behind the war memorial.
