A football boot recycling initiative has launched at Westbury United Football Club to stop boots going to landfill and enable people to donate or claim a pair.
The scheme is supporting Football Rebooted, football’s biggest environmental movement, with a drop-off point at the club. The initiative aims to increase accessibility to football by making it free and easy to claim spare boots.
“We saw it at an opponent’s ground a few weeks back and their feedback was good,” said Matt from the Westbury United Supporters Club.
“The reason for signing up is just to help people on their football journey, if that’s someone new to the game or someone who just needs the next size boots up… they’re not cheap when little feet grow so quick!
“Also, there’s the landfill issue. We are also looking at recycling more waste and have started composting some of it. It’s early stages and a work in progress but there is a potential to put it back on the pitch at some point or even create enough to sell.”
People with undamaged and clean boots they no longer use can drop them off at the collection box. Anyone wishing to pick up a pair of boots can take them from the donation point when the club is open.
