WESTBURY’S eighth annual Music and Arts Festival got off to a flying start last month and continues to draw in the crowds with daily entertainment.
The past 10 days have played host to a wide variety of entertainment as the festival works its way through its biggest programme ever.
Chair of the festival Ian Cunningham said, “The festival’s going really well, and there have been some fantastic events. I’m particularly impressed by how many people have been turning up at the free lunchtime concerts – we had 130 people at the first event which is great.
“Access All Arias was also a special evening, and their act is very cleverly done. We had to bring in extra places for the harmonica and drumming workshops because they were in high demand.
“We could always do with more people at some of the events but it’s difficult to engage everyone. It’s often stressful as the chairman, to be sure that everything will come together, but I’m pleased that it’s going well!”
There have been over 30 events so far including concerts, exhibitions, talks, and music workshops.
Another nine are coming up before the festival comes to a head on Sunday with the Frome Swing Band at the Paragon Hall.
Craig Charles
The 16-day string of events kicked off with a show from actor BBC 6Music DJ Craig Charles, who brought his funk and soul show to Club Ice.
Local man Leander Morales. who organised the event said, “It was an incredible night and Craig really enjoyed himself – so much so, in fact, that he extended his set because he it was going so well.
“I’m very honoured to have been able to put on such a big act, and the support has been incredible and made it all worthwhile putting on the event for Westbury.
“It was a shame we didn’t sell more tickets to the show as Craig was such a high profile performer. I know it is difficult to encourage people to come the these events but it would be great to see more support in the town. If events like this and the festival as a whole were better attended, high quality acts are more likely to want to play in the town in future.
“Nonetheless it was a brilliant night and I was very pleased with it!”
