WESTBURY Rotarian David Pike reflects on a busy and successful year for Westbury Rotary Club.
“At our most recent event we were well supported in a rousing carol concert led by Rotarian Mervyn Harris at All Saints Parish Church Westbury. There were inspiring performances by students from Matravers School choir and children from Bitham Brook and Dilton Marsh Junior Schools. We were supported ably by Bratton Silver Band and treated to a visit from Father Christmas and his elf. We value our connection with Matravers School and hope to assist students in entering several Rotary led National Competitions in 2017.
“We raised over £1,000 in the latest fund raising event, the annual International Cuisine Evening held at the Laverton. We will be making a large donation to Julia’s House, a local childrens’ hospice to be set up in Devizes to fulfil a local need. Thanks are due to Cinnamon Lounge restaurant Westbury and to Thelma and her team and Inner Wheel Club of Westbury who worked hard behind the scenes. Finally thanks to rotarian Julian Sandoe who masterminded the successful evening.
“We should also like to thank all those who help at the Laverton which makes events held there run so smoothly including the management, administration, caretaker and support staff.
“We as rotarians enjoy meeting local people and giving support when we can to local causes. There is also an international network of Rotary Clubs which is focused on major projects such as eradicating polio worldwide.
“Finally as we enter our 60th year of Rotary charitable and service activities in Westbury, we look forward with enthusiasm to our next fund raiser the Annual Imber Ultra Marathon supported by Avon Valley Runners and many individual competitors to be run on Sunday 5th March. It will be an event worth watching or indeed competing in. There is a dedicated website found by searching Imber Ultra which gives further information. If you would like to support the Imber Ultra please be at Leighton Sports Centre from 12.45pm on Sunday 5th March to cheer on the runners at the finish and to watch the presentations. There will be a bar, tea, coffee and food available.
“President Sue Ezra, immediate past President Jim Heath and all Westbury Rotarians would above all like to thank those who have supported what we do in 2016.”
