Weekly Pilates sessions designed to support the wellbeing of older members of the community are running at the United Reform Church.
Sessions take place every Thursday from 3.15pm until 4.15pm and are specifically catered to older people but open to all adults.
“Pilates is a gentle but highly effective form of exercise that focuses on flexibility, posture, balance, mobility and core strength in a friendly and supportive environment,” said Marie Bennett, the FE Certified Pilates Teacher who runs the sessions.
Sessions are one hour long and incorporate a variety of equipment including resistance bands, small weights, wobble cushions and Pilates balls to help improve strength, coordination and stability. All equipment is provided.
“Many attendees have reported improved balance and confidence through attending the classes,” said Marie. “I also include practical movement exercises such as safely getting up and down from the floor, sit-to-stand techniques and simple activities that people can practise at home with family members as fun and beneficial exercises.
“The sessions are designed not only to support physical wellbeing, but also to encourage social interaction and help people remain active and independence.”
The sessions run as part of the u3a network. U3a membership costs £10 and sessions cost £8 each. The first session is completely free to attend.
