TEN-year old Imogen Harris was announced as the winner of Westbury Town Council’s climate change story writing competition at the recent Christmas lights switch on.

The competition was open to anyone in Westbury and the theme was climate change – your view of the future. Imogen’s story was called, ‘A polar bear’s tale.’
Westbury Town Council say, “Imogen produced the winning story that focused on the plight of polar bears who were witnessing their habitat reducing and their food supplies diminishing through global warming. The councillors felt that the story highlighted the impact of climate change on the world’s wildlife and the importance of protecting all species.”
Imogen’s mother, Lexy, added, “I’m just so proud of her! She did all the work herself and some of the reactions from people have been so nice to hear. Her story was also read out in her school assembly so it’s great to see her getting the recognition she deserves.”
An excerpt from her story reads, “As I sat there, I saw something that I had never seen before. It was moving very fast and making a continual screech that deafened me. It had wheels and it had a strange liquid pouring out that I knew was not water.
“As it drew closer to me, I saw that there was something inside of this strange contraption. It might have been a human. As it headed up towards the mountains a black cloud followed behind. The air was filled with smoke, and I felt my body shaking and coughing.”
