FRACK Free Westbury will be continuing its public appeal next week with a showing of ‘The Truth Behind the Dash for Gas’, in a bid to educate more people about the potential dangers of fracking. There will also be a talk in Warminster by a man who is currently on hunger strike opposite Downing Street.
The film, which explores the potential effects of fracking, will be screened at the Laverton on Thursday 28th April from 7.30pm.
The group is trying to spread its message that fracking should be opposed anywhere near Westbury, after a company was awarded licences last year to explore for gas in the area.
Committee member Roy Inwood said, “Frack Free Westbury has been set up to endeavour to stop any fracking in and around Westbury. Other towns like Warminster and Frome have already set up their own groups.
“If you would like to know more about fracking or be part of the small, friendly group which has been formed, there are various meetings coming up.
“Fracking would bring the prospect of water contamination and increased HGV traffic in the site set-up stages and the removal of contaminated residue.
“Let’s gather together and do something before it’s too late.”
Fracking is a process which involves pumping fluid into the ground to shatter rocks and release gas for extraction. It has attracted widespread criticism from campaigners who claim that it can pollute water supplies and cause earthquakes.
South Western Energy was offered licences last year to explore for gas in the Westbury and Trowbridge area, but no further information has been released about the firm’s intentions.
Gayzer Frackman, who is 15 days into a hunger strike in protest to fracking, will visit the Keep Wiltshire Frack Free event on Wednesday 20th April at the Old Bell, Warminster at 7.30pm.
