CHILDREN in Mr Slater’s Year six class at Bitham Brook School held a general election on June 8th.
Two pupils from the class, CJ and Amber have sent this report:
“Mr Slater came up with four colours for parties and the children were sorted into them by drawing names out of a hat. The four parties were: Turquoise, Pink, Orange and Purple and each had eight children in it.
“They then started brainstorming some ideas which later turned into their manifestos. The parties had to come up with five policies: one for Bitham Brook; one for Westbury; one for the UK; one for the world and one for the environment.
“After the holidays these policies were noted down on a power point that was two slides long. The year sixes also created posters and flyers to advertise their parties.
“On the Wednesday there was an assembly where each party had three minutes to present their ideas and power point. There was also an opportunity for the rest of the school to challenge the parties by asking questions.
“The next day was election day, children were taken into the hall (which was the Polling Station) to vote confidentially as though it was a real general election.
“At the time of writing this we are still awaiting the results, which are currently being counted. They will be announced in a celebration assembly.”
Year six teacher, Mr Slater, added, “One of the Bitham Brook values – Teamwork – was demonstrated by the year sixes whilst developing their policies, and the whole school were really enthused by the British Value of democracy – the opportunity to vote for what they believe in.”
