A WESTBURY woman recently raised £170 in a cake sale to donate towards a Frome teenager’s urgent cancer treatment appeal.
Emma Midwinter and staff at Wellhead Lane care home recently baked cakes and sold them in their neighbourhood, raising £170 for Daryl Allinson of Frome, whose family are raising £100,000 to treat his rare form of Leukaemia.
Wellhead Lane manager Tina Marsden said, “Emma and our staff baked cakes and went round selling them in Wellhead Lane, Leighton Green and Acacia Drive.
“The generosity of everyone in the area has astounded them because not only did people buy the cakes, but they also gave generous donations.
“Wellhead Lane is a small home for young adults with autism and learning difficulties, and getting involved in community work like this is a really positive experience for the young people.
“It is really gratifying to find such a welcoming community in Westbury and also to know that people here care about the welfare of others.
“Well done to Emma, too – this is the first time she has got involved in something like this and she seemed to enjoy every minute of it, including the quality assurance tests on the cakes prior to selling!
“The £170 has already been donated to the Allinson family so well done Westbury, thank you for supporting the Allinson family, and also for supporting Wellhead Lane and the people who live here to get involved in the community.”
Daryl Allinson is thought to be the only person in the UK with his form of Leukaemia, and his family are raising £100,000 to fund a bone marrow transplant unavailable on the NHS.
