RESIDENTS in and around Bratton recently made the most of their old discarded Christmas trees by hosting a tree throwing event on the Village Green on Saturday 9th January.
This well attended Firling event took a hiatus last year but returned stronger than ever in the New Year, with over 30 residents taking on each other to see who could throw a Christmas tree the furthest.
The £2 entry fee was collected in aid of the charity, Devizes Opendoors, that seeks to support homeless and vulnerable adults towards safe and settled homes and the event managed to raise £75.
The organiser Sue Kemp said, “Contestants and spectators had an enjoyable morning on the Village Green. Contestants swung their Christmas trees whilst shouting out ‘I firl ye, fair fir, I firl ye’.
“Awards were given to Best Comedy Firl and Loudest Firl. The prestigious Longest Firl was won by Andrew who firled an impressive 10.4 meters. Junior winners were Byron and Holly.
“Thank you to everyone who attended the event! We hope to see you all again next year.”
