A performance of Alan Bennett’s comedy Habeas Corpus will come to Bratton next month.
The Jubilee Players will perform the play on Thursday 7th, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th May from 7.30pm at the Jubilee Hall.
The fast-paced play follows 11 characters who are navigating the permissive society of the 1970s. These include Dr Athur Wicksteed and his wife Muriel who both engage in extramarital affairs, and their son Dennis, who lies about an illness to marry Felicity, who is hiding a pregnancy. The large cast leads to many comedic mix-ups and crossovers.
“It’s a funny play, we do enjoy it,” said director Roger, who also plays the role of Arthur Wicksteed. “There’s a lot of people, so there’s a lot of organising to get it right and to get a good flow, but we’re at a good point now.”
Chairman Rupert said, “It’s set in the 1970s, so it’s a little inappropriate at times!”
The cast consists of people from Bratton, Westbury, Warminster and Trowbridge with varying levels of acting experience.
The group puts on three productions across the year and are encouraging more local people, especially younger people, to join them, either in on-stage or backstage roles.
Rupert said, “Come to watch a production and see what goes on. Rehearsals are generally at 8pm, we take a break around Christmas and in the summer, but otherwise there’s a rehearsal every Wednesday and we invite people to come along.”
