BA13 Community Area Partnership chair, Carole King, and local councillor David Jenkins, got together with volunteers recently to ‘Clean for the Queen’ in the vicinity of the railway embankments bordering Slag Lane and the Minehole on Frogmore Lane, Westbury.
Often working amongst tightly packed briar and related vegetation, volunteers worked hard for several hours to fill 24 bags and collect larger items for collection by Wiltshire Council.
Carole said, “It was a fantastic effort, and because of the determined effort of the volunteers we covered a much larger area than we had originally planned; I would really like to thank everyone involved.”
Looking closely at the waste collected, cllr Jenkins remarked, “At least half of all of the waste collected is household waste which reinforces the need for us to encourage more people to recycle more often.”
Other waste included bags of animal waste tossed over the fence instead of being taken home. Everyone agreed that the situation is not helped by the public bins being constantly full and called for Wiltshire Council to do its part by emptying the public bins more often.
Cllr Jenkins will organise another public clean-up during the summer and hopes next time much less waste is collected.
