2016 is a very special year for Guide Dogs, says local organiser, Hilary Reed. It marks 85 years since the first four Guide Dogs qualified in the first week of October in 1931.
“During that time the first four dogs, all German Shepherds, qualified – unlike today when the usual type of dog that’s used is Labrador or Retriever, which is the breed of my current puppy Nessie who enters training on 26th September.
“To celebrate this landmark the local Westbury/ Warminster branch is holding two events during October. The first event is a fun quiz night on Saturday 1st October at the Labour Club commencing at 8pm. There will be a prize for the winning team.
“Please come and test your knowledge and have some fun at the same time. Teams of 4, £2.50 per person. There will also be a raffle on the night.
“The second event will be my annual Coffee Morning also at the Labour Club on Saturday 15th October from 10am to 12noon. There will be some new stalls this year as well as the usual ones too, including the very popular cake stall, always a good selection of homemade cakes. Come and buy your Christmas gifts and cards early. We will also have a grand raffle.
“Come and meet the local puppy walkers and Guide Dog owners and have a chat and a rare cuddle with our dogs whilst you relax with coffee and cake.
“These events are being held by kind permission of the Labour Club committee and I would like to extend my grateful thanks for their invaluable support over the last 15 years.
“Look forward to seeing you at one or both events.
