WESTBURY welcomed the ‘old enemy’ Trowbridge 2nds to Knott Field hoping to consolidate their second place in the league above neighbours Warminster who were one point behind.
It took just eight minutes for Westbury to open the scoring when hooker, Jack Bates, crossed the line after a quickly taken tap penalty. Standoff Sam Leat, converted the try. This was followed by Jamie Dixon who had recently returned from duty with the army, scoring the first of what was to become a try hat-trick for him.
Minutes later, Dixon scored his second try after a combination of great handling by three of the forwards, prop Michael Tuck, number eight Tom Redman and flanker Ryan Knight who worked the ball out to the grateful hands of the outside centre for him to score. The conversion was missed.
Minutes later, second row, Mark Catley-Day, joined in the try-fest when he scored his first try in Westbury colours since rejoining the club. Once again Sam Leat added the extras.
The final try of the half was Dixon’s third, after replacement centre and new signing Scott Lowe followed his kick ahead and beat the defence to gather the ball and pass out to Dixon for him to score. Leat added the conversion.
Half-time saw Westbury leading by 33 – 0.
The second half saw Trowbridge start well with a well-worked try after just two minutes. Westbury replied with Scott Lowe scoring his debut try just a couple of minutes later, Sam Leat again converting. Then on the 20 minute mark, Trowbridge scored a try out wide, which was converted. Westbury once again drew further ahead when wing, Alex Down, scored on 25 minutes after the ball was passed to him from an excellent rolling maul. Not converted.
Once again Trowbridge worked hard and were rewarded with a converted try on 33 minutes. The final try of the game was scored by replacement prop, Reece Ball, who took a quick tap penalty just inside the Trowbridge half and ran through the defence to touch down over the try line. The conversion again was missed.
The score at the final whistle saw Westbury 50 – Trowbridge 19. This bonus point win moves Westbury another five points further ahead of third place team, Warminster.
