Do you have a few hours to spare each week and want to make a difference in your local community? Crosspoint, the local community support centre for the Westbury area, is helping twice as many people this year and they need more volunteers to help with this increased demand for their services.
This week marks the 39th annual Volunteers Week where people from across the country are being encouraged to volunteer some spare time in their local community.
Based in the Market Place, Crosspoint is in need for volunteers to support people at one of their four half-day drop-in sessions each week, working alongside at least one other volunteer.
They are also looking for more receptionists to avoid lone working when counsellors are seeing people one-to-one, and they are looking for trustees (following a period of time working as a volunteer).
Chair of Crosspoint, Kevin Fairman says, “In these ongoing challenging times, I’m sure we all know a family member, friend or neighbour who is finding things difficult. At Crosspoint, we are now helping double the number of people compared with the same period in 2022. We are always looking to recruit volunteers to help and to bring new ideas to the charity.
“We look forward to meeting you and hope you can help provide the much-needed support to the local community in Westbury and the surrounding villages.”
Crosspoint provides a range of services such as carrying out checks to see if people are receiving all the benefits they are entitled to (including Pension Credits, Personal Independence Payments, Carer’s Allowance, Attendance Allowance); providing information requested by government agencies and following up with any claims/mandatory reconsiderations; offering guidance on the formal options available to people in financial debt; and they offer support with CV writing, housing association and/or landlord correspondence and scanning/photocopying formal documents.
On top of this, Crosspoint can make referrals to the Westbury Area Network (WAN) food bank (if people meet the criteria set by the WAN), and they also offer an adult and young persons’ counselling service, with qualified counsellors.
Crosspoint is open for drop-in sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 4pm, Fridays 10am to 12.30pm and Saturdays 10am to 12.30pm.
