WESTBURY Town Council is looking into the history of the town’s crest in order to use it for promotional information.
It has been documented that the town crest was presented to the town by Matthew Ley, a relation of James Ley, Earl of Marlborough in 1597. Ley was elected as Member of Parliament for Westbury in 1597, 1604 and 1609-1614.
Town councillor, Sally Hendry found a book with reference to the crest, stating, “the arms of the borough are, Quarterly Or and Azure, a cross patonce within a bordure charged with twenty lioncels rampant, all counterchanged. It is of silver and engraven on it: ‘Matheus Ley dedit An Dom’ 1597.’” Town clerk, Deborah Urch said, “We are looking into its history as we are planning to expand the Westbury banner underneath, so we can include Westbury Town Council for promotional information.”
