Schools across Westbury have been closed for a second consecutive day as temperatures continue to soar during the ongoing heatwave.
Many local schools were closed yesterday and today, Thursday 25th June, following a Met Office red extreme heat warning.
A letter to parents from the Acorn Education Trust, which runs Dilton Marsh Primary School and Chapmanslade Primary School, said, “A red warning is the highest level of weather warning. It means the heat is expected to affect many people, not only those who are usually more vulnerable. The warning highlights the risk of serious illness and danger to life, the need for people to change their normal routines, and possible disruption to services such as transport and communications.
“We have looked carefully at what this could mean across our schools and nurseries, including classroom temperatures, humidity, children moving around the site, lunchtime arrangements, travel to and from school, and the additional risks for younger children and those with medical needs. Given the seriousness of the warning, we do not believe it would be safe or sensible to run our settings as normal on these days.”
Most schools are expected to reopen on Friday as cooler conditions are forecast.
