This year’s Imber Ultra marathon will return in March, and organisers are encouraging runners and volunteers to get involved.
The ultra-marathon will take place on Sunday 1st March, starting at Leighton Recreation Centre. The route is 33.5 miles long and takes runners onto the Imber Range Perimeter Path, travelling towards Bratton, then on to Highlands End, Tilshead and Chitterne, before returning to Westbury via the outskirts of Warminster.
There are five checkpoints along the route, manned by volunteers who supply runners with water, food and encouragement, as well as making sure they are on track to complete the course within the allotted time.
“The run is a popular event in the running community and is often used as a run up towards the Bath Half and the London Marathon,” said Jon Street from the Rotary Club of Westbury, who organise the race alongside Avon Valley Runners.
“It has attracted about 150 competitors from all over the UK in the past, so we have increased the available places to 160 this year. The first runner is expected to complete this gruelling course in well under five hours, which is some achievement.”
All runners will receive a goody bag, as well as a mug from White Horse Pottery.
