WESTBURY United are set to play in the FA Trophy this season – the first time in the club’s 102-year history.
United will play away against Thame United on 10th September.
One of the club’s joint managers, Lewis Porter said, “We’ve never been at this level before, so it’ll be our first time playing in the FA Trophy – it’s exciting but we’re keen to make a name for ourselves this year.
“The cup gives you the chance to go around the country to play at some great grounds, play some tough teams and get your club’s name out there – the opportunities are massive.
“Our first experience of the FA Trophy will be tough – we’re playing away so will really need the support of our fans on that night. Hopefully we get past this first round and see where it takes us!
“The league will be our number one priority, but we will try and go as far as we can and help push the club up financially. I’m sure the boys will be wanting to push on in the FA Trophy as we’ll have some cracking trips just like we did in the cup competitions last season.”
Bolstering the squad ahead of the new season
United have made two new signings in preparation for the increased challenge the club will face next season as they play in the Southern League for the first time ever – centre forward Martin Johnson and midfielder Charlie Walton.
Martin has re-joined the club from Warminster Town FC and Charlie joins the club from Bradford Town.
“We’re over the moon to get Martin in,” said Lewis. “Ricky (the other manager) and I played with him for many years, so we knew he’d fit right in. He adds a different dimension to our attacking options.
“We’ve also signed the Bradford captain, Charlie Walton, who is a massive signing for the club. He’s been the priority signing for Ricky and I and he was the first man we wanted through the door to help us next season. It looked like we were going to have him poached from us as loads of clubs were after him, but I’m glad we managed to get it finalised.
“Charlie is a really powerful centre midfielder who will help command the rhythm of the game, he can score goals, put in heavy tackles and will really improve the team.”
• United’s first league match will be against Willand Rovers away on Saturday 13th August.
Their promotion to the Southern League now means they will be playing locals rivals Melksham FC and Frome Town FC.
They will play Melksham Town away on Monday 29th August and at home on Monday 2nd January with Frome Town away on Saturday 22nd October and at home on Saturday 25th March.
