FAIRFIELD Farm College in Dilton Marsh has introduced art onto its curriculum to huge success, seeing two of their students nominated in a national competition.
Luke Perry and Daniel Cooper will be travelling to Wales in July to find out whether they are prize winners in the 2D art category for the ‘Create Art for Autism’ competition. 17 students from Fairfield entered the competition.
“A college tutor recently made the case to senior managers that art could enhance the college curriculum by improving students’ communication and coordination skills, as well as empowering and inspiring them to achieve their potential,” said Principal, Janet Kenward. “This led to the project being worked on two days a week, with students finding it very productive.
“Work from their art classes is available for sale in the college cafe and reception whilst being displayed alongside professional artist’s pieces. Two pieces have been sold already, with two more being nominated for the competition.
“The college is hoping to expand the classes from just one portacabin, as space is proving a slight issue. However they are into the final phase of a five part college development which will hopefully see the creation of a new art room so that the good work can continue and develop.
“Development work started early due to a generous grant from the Education Funding Agency. When we were offered the grant it was too good to say no to and too scary to say yes to!”
