WESTBURY Heritage Society has completed the first of a series of surveys in the Westbury History and Archaeological Tour (the WHAT project).
A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund means the project can investigate a number of historical sites in the Westbury area, training volunteers and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to undertake historical and archaeological research across the sites.
Westbury Heritage Society member Ivan Clark explains that new evidence has been discovered in the first series. He said, “Members, volunteers and professional archaeologists used geophysical equipment to search for evidence of soil disturbance and stone structures.
“Early results indicate interesting new evidence which, when fully analysed, will improve our knowledge and interpretation of the site. “This follows talks on a range of topics to aid research held recently at Westbury Visitor Centre. “A visit to English Heritage Archive in Swindon has also taken place to show members the collection of air photographs held there and what else is available to aid the research.
“When completed later this year, the full results of the Westbury History and Archaeological Tour will be available in a digital format at Westbury Visitor Centre.”
The WHAT project got under way in March this year, after the Westbury Heritage Society was awarded a grant of £20,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Pictured: Out on a survey and a visit to the English Heritage Archive in Swindon.
