FORMER mayor of Westbury, John Clegg, who served the town as mayor over two separate years in 1997 and 2000, died on Thursday 5th July after battling serious health problems.
John, alongside his wife Marion, moved to Westbury from Watford in 1979. After taking an interest in the town he decided to join Westbury Town Council where he was elected in 1987, later becoming chairman of the council. He then became mayor in 1997 and again in 2000. Marion had been mayor in 1992 and 1993.
Sue Newell, who knew John for around 45 years wrote words of remembrance for John, who was a worshipper at All Saints Church. She said, “John worked for several local organisations on a voluntary basis, always trying to improve things in the area. He was particularly proud to have served as a governor, and as chairman of governors, for Matravers School.
“John was a hard-working and articulate man, with a friendly disposition and a wry sense of humour. In recent years John had battled with some serious health problems but he was stoical, never complained, and usually showed concern for others rather than for himself. He will be sorely missed.”
For those who knew John, his funeral will be taking place at All Saints Church in Westbury on Monday 30th July at 11am where you are welcome to attend.
