A GROUP of ex-Westbury United players and volunteers have joined forces to clean up the football ground at Meadow Lane before the start of the new season.
The group, who call themselves the Mighty Westbury United FC Stalwarts, have been busy painting the dugouts and other areas, relaying turf, preparing linesmen running strips, removing both sets of goal posts ready for the brand new set, filling potholes in the car park, hedge trimming and more.
Terry Morgan, on behalf of Westbury United FC said, “We, the gang of Stalwarts, decided that as we have had a team in Westbury United to be proud of, we should also try and clean up the ground as it had not been cleaned up for at least 25 years.
“A big thank you must go to Geoff Steer, Keith Harvey and Roy Dutchman for clearing and giving the main stand the once over. Also to Phil Alford, Stu Fryer, Paul Board and Radek Evans.
“To Adrian Bass for painting the dugouts and other areas. Also Michael John Cooper and Tyler Gane of MJC Construction for removing the very old goal posts and getting the bases ready for the brand new sets which have been arranged by United FC striker Rik Hulbert.
“Also thank you to Simon Hillman of Ross Hillman who have come down to the club and offered advice on how we can fill in the potholes in the car park.
“John and Trevor Martin of Western Skip Hire with the assistance of Pete Andrews and Dopey Derek for the three skips kindly donated. Adrian Harvey for the donation of petrol powered strimmers and hedge trimmers along with fuel.
“Thank you to Franky Watson who repaired the old ticket shed with wood and ply kindly donated by Duncan and Nick Wilkins of Timber and Allied Services.
“Also to 1st Call Skips who kindly have offered to provide a free skip to stay on site, to be filled as and when we like.
“I have to thank Ian Meaden of The Menu Shop, Kev Sheppard of DACCS, Brian Gordon of Form Works, Pete Davies and old Westbury United footballer, Barry Ayelife and Lady Louise Trueman, a Westbury United supporter, for their very generous donations that paid for the new goal post netting.
“Thank you to Rainbow paints, Davies hardware store and Hire Standards for the materials and tools they have supplied for the job.
“During the clean up we have been ably supported by Jim Pinkernell, Jordan Pinder and Adam Gough who have helped us move and rip out a lot of the brambles and Mick Cooper and Tyler Gane of MJC Construction who also gave their time to help.
“Finally I want to mention Julian and Sue Ashford of The Railway Inn, also Graham Galpin, Barry Taylor, Phil and Colin Mould all for there generous donations towards the grass seed (was going to be turf) that we are using to re-seed the linesmen running tracks. Thanks – this money came in very useful to us.
“However, despite the help from everyone, we still need more help. We undertake the ground clearing work every Wednesday from 9am to 2pm.”
