WESTBURY Cricket Club have started to host free weekly one-hour disability cricket sessions, called Super 1s, in conjunction with the Leighton Recreation Centre.
The sessions are on Tuesdays from 5pm to 6pm for 12- to 25-year-olds at Leighton Recreation Centre. The cricket club say the initial sessions have been well supported and will continue into the winter.
Super 1s is a cricket-based programme run throughout Wiltshire, giving young people with disabilities the opportunity to play cricket regularly. The aim of the programme is to use cricket as a tool for participant’s personal development, equipping them with a variety of personal, social and transferable skills that can be taken into a variety of different situations.
Within Wiltshire there will be a total of four hubs (Swindon, Chippenham, Salisbury and Westbury), incorporating a series of different activities developing throwing, catching and ball striking skills. During these sessions participants get the opportunity to try new activities, meet new people and explore new environments.
The scheme is funded by the Lord Taverners programme and run by Wiltshire Cricket. Lord Taverners creates a range of opportunities for young disabled people and those from deprived areas to engage in sport and recreational activities in their local communities.
