FOLLOWING advice from UK Athletics that all running events be suspended until the end of June. We have made the decision to cancel the May & June edition of the AVR Westbury 5K 2020 series.

At present we are hopeful that events will be able to resume in July but if not there is still the August event to come.  Once events are able to commence again we will review the situation and if appropriate and possible we will try to reschedule.

For those entered into the May event you can have your entry automatically transferred to the first available event once normal services resume.

Westbury Virtual 5k

A previous running of the Westbury 5K

As of June 1st the virtual Westbury 5k segment will be live.
It is listed as a Strava segment here.

In order to improve safety of solo runners the course will be run in reverse so that if you need to move of the footpath to avoid anyone you will be running towards any incoming traffic and have full visibility of what is oncoming.

So starting from outside the VW garage you head up the road towards Players bar. You will complete three laps as normal but staying on the footpath all the way round and finish just past the caravan park entrance.
A START and FINISH marker have been tied to the appropriate lamp post to show relative positions and ensure you complete the full segment.

During your attempt you are encouraged to run on the footpaths all the way round. Be aware of other runners and pedestrians and maintain appropriate social distancing at all times. The estate is a live site so be aware of crossing side streets and business entrances for traffic. We advise running after normal working hours as the site is much quieter. When running under the trees at the bottom of the loop beware the pavement is a little uneven due to tree roots so watch your footing.

To have your attempts registered please join the AVT Westbury 5k group

All valid attempts will be logged and a weekly table produced.
We will look at individual rankings based on best times, Most attempts and improvement over month if more than one attempt made and maybe fastest lap.
The event is completely free of charge and just for fun and kudos.

AVR Virtual Relay

Sean Price at the finish line

The AVR Relay will go ahead…virtually! The virtual AVR Relay is now open to enter and you have until Saturday the 4th of July 23:59pm to enter. Assemble your dream team, enter for free via Entry Central https://www.entrycentral.com/AVRRelay2020 and get running! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF AVON VALLEY RUNNERS OR A RUNNING CLUB TO ENTER. The event will be raising money for the charity Shelter via this JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/avrrelay
Please ask your teammates to make a small donation on the page which will be posted on the Facebook event page/AVR website.

From Monday the 22nd of June to Sunday the 5th of July runners will have two weeks to complete a leg for their team. This means runners won’t be out and about all on one day! You can do this wherever you like providing that you are following the socially distancing measures. Once you have ran your leg preferably post on the Facebook event page a picture of your watch or a screenshot of your Strava/Garmin with your completed time. If you do not have access to Facebook then please email hollyjeannewman@hotmail.co.uk .Times for results will use ELASPED TIME not MOVING TIME so if you are planning to take a picture of your watch instead of a screenshot of your Strava/Garmin analysis don’t pause your watch mid run. We are trusting runners to be honest about their times!
In your team you need four legs completed of the following distances: 2.5km (1.55 miles) , 5km (3.11 miles) , 7.5km (4.66 miles) , 10km (6.21 miles)

There are category competitions which are slightly differently to previous years to try and keep things simple but also to keep things fun!
• Best team name
• Best socially distanced team picture: get creative! This could be everyone together or 4 pictures put together!
• Best picture running in fancy dress
• 1st Male Team
• 1st Female Team
• 1st Junior Team*
• 1st Mixed Team (at least one male and one female)
*All members of a junior team must be below the age of 18 on race day. Runners running the 10km leg must be 16years old or over at the time of running the leg.

Let’s have some fun and raise money for charity: COVID-19 will not beat this race!
