An extremely wet afternoon at Meadow Lane and great credit to both sides for an entertaining encounter, as well as to the groundsman for ensuring the pitch could cope as well as possible.
The similarities to Westbury’s 3-1 Boxing Day win at Weymouth Street were stark, only on this occasion United kept a clean sheet, their 4th in a row and extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches!
Warminster, with Charlie Walton prominent in midfield, gave as good as they got in the first half and probably deserved to go in level at the break.
Both sides had chances; Joe Stradling, Jamie Jordan and Mark Robinson created openings for the hosts, as did Walton, Ash Caws and George Butler for Town but as usual recently, the home defence were on top form.
Visiting keeper Nathan Ball did well to save from Ricky Hulbert and Josh Ferguson.
A sustained spell of pressure led to the opening goal on 29 minutes; Ricky Hulbert pulled away at the back post and headed in Mark Robinson’s cross.
Walton and Butler were at the heart of a fine move towards half time and Lewis Porter saved Butler’s deflected effort.
Conditions worsened straight after the break and United took control within 5 minutes when Robinson headed the second goal from Jordan’s corner on 49.
Westbury were too strong all over the pitch and Warminster created no chances at all in the 2nd half!
Leon Greenland had a shot over the bar after more fine play by Robinson. Then Ricky Hulbert teed up with Jake Hiscocks whose strike was saved by Ball.
Ball went on to make a series of excellent saves to keep the score down, denying Jordan, Robinson, Hiscocks and Ryan Baggs either side of the 3rd goal which came on 82. More excellent play by Robinson saw his shot rebound off the post where Martin Johnson forced it over the line in a muddy scramble!
