Ticks carry several diseases, but the most important in the UK is Lyme disease; the number of cases of which is increasing every year, in both humans and dogs.
There are a few very effective treatments available to prevent ticks attaching to dogs and cats but care must be taken that whichever is chosen it is safe for your size and type of pet.
If no tick treatment is used it is important for pets to be checked for ticks frequently and for them to be removed with a tick hook as soon as they are spotted. Care should be taken not to leave any part of the tick behind as this can cause nasty skin lesions. Your vet will be happy to give advice on the best treatment option available for your pet.
