The local physiotherapy business, Progression Physiotherapy, has shared some tips for helping people safely return to activities after a long layoff.
“Now the weather is changing, and the days are longer, it’s time to get back to your favourite activity,” says Chartered Physiotherapist Kirsty McCrann. “Maybe a hike up Battlesbury, a round of golf with friends or a long dog walk in Longleat woods? Returning to your favourite activity can be exciting, but it’s important to do so safely to avoid re-injury or further damage.”
She has shared some tips to help people return to their activities after a long layoff.
“Before returning to your activity, it’s important to assess your current level of fitness,” she said. “This can be done by consulting with a physiotherapist, who can perform a physical assessment and identify any potential areas of concern. The physiotherapist can then create a customised plan to help you gradually and safely increase your activity level.
“It’s important to start slow and gradually increase the intensity of your activity to avoid re-injury. This can be done by gradually increasing the duration and intensity of your activity over time, taking frequent breaks, and listening to your body’s signals.
“Warming up and cooling down before and after your activity is crucial to avoid injury. A proper warm-up should include dynamic stretching and movements specific to your activity. A cool-down should include stretching and breathing exercises to help your body recover from the activity.
“Strengthening exercises can help prepare your body for the demands of your activity and reduce the risk of injury. We can help design a programme of exercises that target the specific muscle groups used in your activity and help you build strength and flexibility.
“Returning to an activity after a long layoff can be challenging, but with the right advice, it can be done safely and effectively. By assessing your current level of fitness, gradually increasing intensity, warming up and cooling down, and incorporating strengthening exercises, you can reduce the risk of re-injury and enjoy your activity with confidence. At Progression Physiotherapy, we are committed to helping clients safely return to their activities and achieve their goals.”
