The Government has informed Westbury MP Andrew Murrison that it will oppose his proposed Waste Incinerators Bill.
Dr Murrison had been preparing to reintroduce legislation aimed at stopping the construction of new waste incinerators. It also proposed taxing waste incineration in an effort to undermine the financial viability of a planned incinerator in Westbury.
However, the MP received a letter from Minister Mary Creagh MP dated 12th May which said, “This Government has already taken steps to limit further energy from waste (EfW) developments in England.
“However, our evidence points to a continued need to bring forward further EfW developments in areas of England that still rely on sending waste to landfill. A complete cessation of further EfW construction would undermine our ability to manage residual waste in accordance with the waste hierarchy.”
Dr Murrison criticised the Government’s decision. He said, “Given the incinerator overcapacity in the UK, the response is highly disappointing. My party’s manifesto at the 2024 general election contained a commitment to no more incinerators. Plainly this Government has different ideas.
“I will continue to campaign strongly against the planned Westbury incinerator.”
