Westbury’s historic buildings will come under the spotlight when leading architectural historian, Julian Orbach, visits the town next month.
Julian, who wrote the ‘Blue Guide to Victorian Buildings’, is currently revising the Wiltshire volume of Pevsner’s ‘Buildings of England’ and will be sharing his findings at a talk organised by Westbury Heritage Society.
The presentation, which will be on Tuesday 2nd October at the Methodist Church in Station Road, is the latest in a series of historic walks and talks organised by the society. It will focus on the town’s historic buildings.
Nikolaus Pevsner is best known for the 46-volume series of county guides published between 1951-74. The Wiltshire volume, published in 1963, gives less than two pages to Westbury but Julian says he has expanded that by more than fifty per cent.
“I have been looking at the buildings relating to the town’s woollen heritage as well as churches and chapels, and the Victorian swimming pool,” explained Julian who is about halfway through his work on revising the Wiltshire volume.
Everyone is welcome to attend the talk. Tickets can be booked through the Westbury Festival website at www.westburyfestival.org.uk or purchased on the door. The talk starts at 7.30pm.
