THE achievements of Westbury’s young people are making their way into the limelight ahead of the town’s first ever young people’s awards next week.
The inaugural Westbury Young People Awards will take place next Friday, 10th March, and celebrate the achievements of young people living in the area, some of whom have been called ‘inspiring’ and ‘incredible’.
Award categories include young carers, volunteers and sporting accolades. The initiative is being run by Westbury’s area board and local youth network, and is based on a successful similar model in Melksham.
Wiltshire Council’s community engagement manager Liam Cripps said, “The rate of nominations significantly increased last week and some truly inspirational stories have landed in the inbox.
“The whole purpose of organising the Westbury Young People Awards is to recognise and showcase local talent and also to bring to the forefront some of the truly incredible stories that perhaps go un-noticed on a day-to-day basis. On the evening of 10th March not only will Westbury Area Board be recognising the winners of 10 award categories, but we will also be treated to performances by local musicians, singers and dance groups, which we are sure will keep the audience entertained throughout the evening.
“The event wouldn’t have been possible without the extremely generous donations from local businesses all of whom are listed on our website www.youngwestbury.org.uk and on behalf of Westbury Area Board; thanks to them all for supporting this event. The Young People Awards will not be a one-off event and planning is already going into the 2017/2018 celebrations.”
Limited tickets are available for the public to attend and can be reserved online by searching ‘Westbury Young People Awards’ at www.eventbrite.co.uk
Wiltshire councillor for local villages and chairman of Westbury Area Board, Jerry Wickham added, “This event is an opportunity to highlight and recognise the excellent work being undertaken by the youth in the Westbury area.
“Sadly, there has been a great deal of noise how looking after and celebrating our younger people’s role in society has been allegedly neglected recently, whereas this event well and truly demonstrates both Wiltshire Council’s and Westbury Area Board’s commitment to our youth.”
