JITTERBUGS News and Sweets, a new shop specialising in old fashioned sweets, has opened in Maristow Street.
Jane Scott, leader of Wiltshire Council, came to open the new shop last week, which is being run by local businessman Jon Cuthbert.
The shop stocks plenty of old favourites including penny sweets, humbugs, bonbons, blue sherbert, mushrooms, rosy apples, chocolate eclairs, and many, many more. In line with 1940s style, sweets are sold in pounds and ounces (with alternative metric measurements available).
The shop is also a convenience store, stocking items such as newspapers (with delivery available), tobacco goods, and icecreams.
Jon said, “On the opening day, I was amazed by the custom I had! I had such a fantastic day, it was so nice to see all the children enjoy the experience us adults had as children in the proper sweet shops from years ago.
“With the kiddies and their parents bringing their bowls up of their penny sweets to pay for, it got quite hectic during the day – even the county council leader Jane Scott and cllr Mike Cuthbert-Murray were helping behind the counter at one point! I would like to thank them both with their busy schedules for helping out – it was a wonderful moment and a real community feel around it all.
“We had, I thought, everything we could get in the shop that people wanted, but I was surprised I missed some items out – I now stock those items! I will endeavour to stock what people ask for, and would also like to let everyone know we also sell newspapers from your nationals to weekly newspapers. Deliveries are offered from £2 per week, and of course we will always stock our most valued paper the White Horse News available from midday every other Tuesday.”
