Issue 508 – Becky skydives for Alzheimer’s Support

A support worker from Westbury is gearing up to jump out of a plane to raise money for a dementia charity.

Becky Mundy, 21, decided to do the skydive for Alzheimer’s Support, which she works for as a support worker.
“I wanted to do this to raise money for the charity, but also to raise awareness of dementia,” said Becky. “There are so many people living with it and yet you don’t hear much about it compared to other illnesses like cancer. I want to raise awareness that there are so many people in our communities who have this and that Alzheimer’s Support does so much to help them”
Becky is one of around 40 support workers who are employed by the charity to spend time with people with dementia in their own homes or take them out and about in the community.
As well as providing stimulation and companionship to the person with memory problems, she and her colleagues also give the main family carer a break.
The charity also runs the Oasis Saturday club in Warminster and an evening memory café in Westbury area. It is also due to start a Singing for the Brain group near Westbury in April.
Latest figures show that there are now 2,120 people diagnosed with dementia in Wiltshire – around 33 per cent of the total number who have the condition.
Becky is hoping to raise £1,000 in the skydive, which takes place at Netheravon on 10th March.
