Westbury Lions Club are hoping their 7th annual Donkey Derby will be the best ever, with lots of activities and stalls running alongside the racing to ensure it will be a great day out for all the family!
Taking place on Sunday 1st July at the White Horse Country Park, attractions will include a fun-fair, mini railway, water walking, bookmaker, tote and lots of stalls. In addition to the fun and games there will be a fully licensed bar and hot food for mums and dads, as well as candy floss, sweets and popcorn for the kids.
This year the event will also be hosting some special visitors from ‘a galaxy far, far away…’, and there will be lots of chances for kids (and adults too!) to have a photo with some of the characters from Star Wars.
Children under 14 (weighing under seven and a half stone) can fulfil their racing dreams as a jockey either by registering in advance with Lion Anita Drago on 01373 823354, or by simply calling into the jockey tent on the day. With eight races taking place throughout the afternoon, there will be plenty of opportunities to take part in the action (parents’ permission is required!).
Those less inclined to racing can opt for a more sedate ride between races, and as always there will be a chance to meet the donkeys in the corral while they enjoy a break.
Lion Nigel Coward said, “The donkey derby has become a firm favourite with the people of Westbury, and we are keen to maintain its momentum. While last September we had to run the gauntlet of winds and showers, we are hoping that by moving the event to July we will ensure a brighter and warmer day for all. “It will be great to see everyone on the day enjoying a flutter on the racing and having a good time. As with every event and activity we do, all the monies raised go back into supporting charities and people in Westbury.” The opening ceremony will commence at 12.30pm, with the first race commencing at 1.00pm. Tickets are £5 per adult, with accompanied children entering free.
