HUNDREDS of people gathered at the Edward Street War Memorial in Westbury to pay their respects at the town’s annual Remembrance Sunday service on November 13th.
Local people came together at the town’s war memorial just before 11am to honour all those who have died in conflicts, for a special remembrance service.
Rev. Rhona Floate and Rev. Steven Jarvis led the service which included Bible readings and hymns. The last post was played and the crowd fell silent at 11am, observing the two-minute silence.
Representatives from local groups and organisations, businesses, schools and past and present servicemen and women then laid wreaths at the memorial. A collection also took place for the Poppy Appeal; the Westbury branch of the Royal British Legion hope to have raised a significant sum for the Poppy Appeal over the remembrance period.
Mary Kneen, chair of the Westbury branch of The Royal British Legion said, “I’m so pleased with how the service went, even the church bells chimed on time! The people of Westbury are fantastic and it really does means a lot to see so many people here, once again everyone did the town proud.
“It was a shame that we didn’t have a parade but I don’t think it spoiled the morning. It was still a very special and moving service.”
