ONE local woman is helping brighten up the town to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society by leaving crocheted forget-me-not flowers at various locations around the town centre.
Vikki Brodie runs BrodiesCorner, a local business that creates hand-made crocheted clothes items that donates 10% of all of its sales to Alzheimer’s Society. Vikki, who has been supported by the Westbury Yarn Bombers, is giving away special crocheted flowers through the month of May to raise awareness and money for the Society and is asking people to donate to the charity by scanning the QR code on the flowers and donating whatever they can.
According to the Alzheimer’s Society a forget-me-not flower represents remembrance and is long associated with dementia. People with dementia may experience memory loss, among other symptoms, which the Society says makes the forget-me-not the perfect flower to represent their cause.
Vikki said, “This month I am raising awareness for Alzheimer’s Society by making forget-me-not flowers and giving them away around Westbury town centre and in random places around the town.
“I have decided to give away forget-me-not flowers throughout all of May, because dementia action week is in May. Dementia action week is an awareness raising campaign. Each year the Alzheimer’s Society works with individuals and organisations across the UK to encourage people to ‘act on dementia’.
“I work very closely with individual with dementia – I also had the honour of helping to look after my nan while she lived with dementia. She passed in December 2019 and will always have a special place in my heart.
“Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.”
You can find the flowers around the town centre and Vikki is asking for people to wear the flower if they see one to bring more awareness to Alzheimer’s Society. You can donate directly to the cause by visiting: https://bit.ly/44GqZq7
