THE national secondary school performance tables, released last week, show that Matravers School has continued with improvements in exam performance.
The performance tables, published by the Department for Education, compare results at GCSE and A-level for secondary schools throughout England.
The tables show that Matravers School has demonstrated that it has consolidated its recent rapid improvements over the last few years. In the latest results 49% of students at Matravers achieved 5 or more A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and maths. This is the same as in 2012 but up on the 47% recorded in 2011.
This compares to a Wiltshire average of 61% and a national average of 59.2%. Matravers School is ranked 31st in Wiltshire following the latest GCSE results out of 57 schools.
Dr Simon Riding, Matravers’ headteacher said, “It was wonderful to see the many areas where results have improved. Our total capped point score for GCSE performance was the highest in the area. This is a key measure for school performance going forward.
“It was also particularly pleasing to see progress rates in maths and English significantly improving. Our more able students also performed well above the national average across all measures.”
At A-level, Matravers showed a slight increase with 100% of pupils achieving one or more A-level, 94% achieving two or more A-levels and 83% achieving three or more A-levels.
The figures also show an average point score per student of 680.3, compared to a Wiltshire average of 775.8 and a national average of 754.4. Matravers is ranked 22nd in Wiltshire following the latest A-level results out of 38 schools.
Dr Riding added, “Our real strength has been in providing a traditional academic offer and our success reflects this.”
Matravers School has further plans for continued improvements. “We have achieved so far through the hard work and dedication of all those involved with the school,” said Dr Riding. “However, our drive and ambition to be the best means that we are already enhancing what we do to make sure that we achieve this. For instance, expanding our post-16 offer to incorporate a much wider variety of A-levels and vocational provision. Alongside this, ensuring that we offer our students the high-quality GCSEs that will guarantee them the life-opportunities that they deserve.”
