Colleagues at Morrisons in Westbury will be banding together to support young lives affected by cancer to mark World Cancer Day, on Monday 4th February

Customers will be able to snap up “Bands Against Cancer” for a suggested donation of £2 and staff will also be collecting cash for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading charity for young cancer patients and their families.

Morrisons colleagues nationwide chose CLIC Sargent as the retailer’s charity partner two years ago and have so far raised more than £6million.

Lisa Litterick, community champion at the store said, “CLIC Sargent does wonderful work supporting children and young people and their families with the devastating emotional and financial impact of cancer. We are looking forward to raising as much as possible.

“The Bands Against Cancer are bound to be popular. They’re available in three different colours – pink, teal and grey – and I’m sure many people will want to collect all three! We’ll also have collection buckets and will welcome any spare change people have.

“There will also be a tombola on Saturday 2nd February, between 10am and 1pm with loads of prizes to win! Staff will be joining in too, by dressing in pink/black for the weekend.’

Joseph Clark-Bland, charity specialist at Morrisons said, “Last year, with the generous support of our customers, our fantastic colleagues across the country raised a magnificent £325,000. This year we’re hoping to do even better.”

Rachel Kirby-Rider, CLIC Sargent’s director of income and engagement said, “The support we’ve had from Morrisons’ colleagues and customers since they chose us as their charity partner has been exceptional. The money they’re raising is making a huge difference to the lives of young people and their families facing cancer.”

This World Cancer Day, CLIC Sargent is highlighting how young cancer patients and their families have to face the financial and emotional burden of cancer coming back. Cancer costs families an average of £600 a month during treatment. These costs hit even harder for families going through cancer more than once.

Sara Owen stars in CLIC Sargent’s World Cancer Day video this year, telling the story of how she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour, the treatment she had to undergo, and how she felt when the cancer sadly came back.

In the video – which you can watch at www.clicsargent .org.uk – Sara shares the emotional story of her journey with cancer and how remarkably, despite the huge disruption to her education, she won a place to study medicine at Kings College, London, where she intends to pursue her passion for the treatment of childhood cancers.
