LOCAL MP Dr Andrew Murrison has written to Steve Barclay MP to congratulate him on his appointment as the new environment minister in the Prime Minister’s reshuffle.
Dr Murrison also asked the minister to meet at his earliest convenience to discuss incinerators in general and the one planned for Westbury in particular.
He has long advocated a moratorium on the granting of planning permission for new incinerators and a tax on incinerators similar to the landfill tax. He has frequently pointed out to ministers that England is currently projected to have excess incinerator capacity and that it will work against more responsible means of waste management.
Steve Barclay has also had experience with incinerators in his capacity as a constituency MP. MVV Environmental Ltd have pursued plans to build an incinerator in the town of Wisbech which is located in his North East Cambridgeshire constituency. He has criticised their plans as ‘deeply flawed’. Andrew Murrison and Steve Barclay met with his predecessor Thérèse Coffey in the summer to object to waste incineration.
Dr Murrison said, “I have written to Steve to congratulate him on his appointment. I am pleased that environmental policy is in the stewardship of someone who understands the problems with incinerators. I look forward to discussing these matters with Steve in his new capacity.”
