IN an effort to try and encourage ex-players back into playing rugby and to give some of the younger ‘fringe’ players more game time, Westbury Rugby set up a friendly fixture with Frome Rugby Club.
The spectators were treated to both a hard and exciting match, with some of the Westbury former players polishing up their boots for the fixture. Westbury were first on the scoreboard when Ash Hart scored after a scrum five metres out, where Hart received the ball to crash over the try line.
20 minutes later, Vinnie Wells was the scorer after Kieran McEntegart showed that he still had the pace of his younger days. He carried the ball from his own half up to the Frome try line, where he was tackled, but got the ball away for Wells to touch down. Frome then replied with a well-worked try of their own. The score at the break was Westbury 10 Frome 5.
The second half started with several changes in the Westbury line-up, and with both sides battling hard for 20 minutes, it was Frome who broke the deadlock and within six minutes scored two excellent tries, making the score 15 – 10 to the visitors. The score remained the same right to the end of the game, with Frome running out the deserving winners.
A return fixture at Frome RFC will be played on the 9th March. Hopefully, this will be the beginnings of Westbury 2nd XV whereby the club will be looking at regular fixtures with local clubs in the area. So, they are looking for players, both experienced and novice, who would like to play ‘social’ rugby as opposed to full-on league and cup rugby.
A big vote of thanks must go to Mat Inseal and Grant Truckle for rounding up the players for the Westbury team, not forgetting Frome Rugby for helping to get the game off the ground.
Anyone wishing to join the club can just turn up at Knott Field, Westbury Country Park, on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm (training night) where you will be made most welcome.
