Bird and bat boxes have been installed across Westbury to increase habitat availability and encourage thriving locations of native wildlife.
The new bird boxes were created in partnership with Westbury Shed, whose members crafted three distinct designs to support a range of bird species. These varied styles help ensure that different types of birds, each with their own nesting preferences, can find suitable, safe spaces in Westbury’s green areas.
In addition, a series of bat boxes funded by the council’s Climate Emergency Committee have been produced and installed by Westbury Town Council’s Community Ranger Team. The boxes are located primarily around Mead Lakes and Westbury Cemetery, creating a link between the cemetery’s established greater horseshoe bat colony and its foraging grounds at Mead Lakes.
By improving habitat connectivity and providing additional roosting options, the project aims to offer valuable support to the local bat population.
A spokesperson for Westbury Town Council said, “These installations reflect our ongoing commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment around Westbury. We look forward to seeing these new habitats flourish and to the positive impact they will have on local wildlife.”
